Polk Audio speakers

How would you rate Polk Audio speakers as compared to some
brands you've heard such as Axiom and Paradigm? I'm thinking of the RTi8
specifically.

The RTi8 looks like one of Polk's newer
speakers in the RTi range. I've heard the older version of that speaker and found
it quite good. The newest incarnation looks to have updated cosmetics and some engineering
refinements as well. The other plus with that particular model is that it plays fairly
deep, so for stereo listening in a reasonable room you're going to hear good bass
response, meaning you may not need a subwoofer, depending on your tastes, of course. I'd
definitely say Polk speakers are competitive with Paradigm and Axiom, and that is saying a
lot.
A new system

I've been auditioning an NAD C350 amp with Quad 11L
speakers and the current NAD C521BEE CD player. I'm very impressed by the system (its
imaging is extraordinary), but before I commit myself I'd like an independent opinion on
this match. My setup at home is a bit limiting, as the speakers will need to be mounted
close to the wall in a recess about 800mm square by about 400mm deep.

If you've heard that exact system then you have a far
more educated opinion than I have not having heard the combo at all. It looks to me like a
fine setup -- I see no incompatibility problems that might arise. The NAD amplifier can
definitely handle those Quads with ease. Regarding your room, remember that everyone has
some compromise to deal with, and your acoustic challenges will be essentially the same
regardless of the gear you choose. So I'd say go for it!
Craves power

I have a Parasound AVC 2500 preamp and 2205AT 225Wpc amp. I
also have Paradigm Studio 100s for the fronts, Paradigm 570 center, and two Servo 15 subs,
along with a Denon 3800 DVD player.
I am always looking to upgrade my stuff. My room is 20' x
30' with 9' ceilings. I guess the system is lacking oomph and I feel like can use a little
bit more power. So I am looking to upgrade my amp. Can you recommend an amp?

Your Parasound, by most people's standards, is quite
powerful already. However, I do know of an amp that should be substantially more powerful
than it, and should be a synergistic match with your speakers as well the new Anthem
Statement P5 or P2. With well over 300W on tap, and from early reports incredible
headroom, it should fit your needs for power just perfectly.
Connecting two speaker cables

I have a speaker cable that is too short and I want to
connect another cable in order to extend it. I know that replacing the entire cable with a
longer one will be the best way, but I do not have that option. Is there a good way to
connect cables -- for example, soldering?

I would think that soldering the ends of the cable,
after de-soldering the terminations, would be the most electrically secure way of doing
what you propose. Doing this would increase the number of soldering joints inline by one.
Soldering the terminations themselves might work, but you'd be increasing the number of
solder joints to four. I can't think of another good way to accomplish your goal. Maybe
one of our readers has a suggestion.
