Amplification for Epos speakers
August 8, 2005
I have Epos 12.2 speakers. I was trying to decide between
buying a Rotel RA-1062 amp and RCD-1072 CD player or the more expensive, but also
critically acclaimed, Musical Fidelity X-150 amp and X-Ray CD player. Your thoughts?
Dalva
I'd opt for the Rotel combination. I've heard that Epos
and Rotel enjoy a particularly high-quality synergy that I'm not sure you could eclipse
with the more expensive Musical Fidelity setup. An audition in your home or at a dealer
would be the ideal way to determine this for sure, of course, but this may not be possible
in your case. If I were purchasing sound unheard I'd go for the higher-value combination.
You can always upgrade later on if you wish. To me that's a better option than spending
bigger bucks when you're not sure there's something audible to gain.
NHT review?
August 4, 2005
You guys have not reviewed any speakers from NHT in a long
while. Will there be any new reviews of their speakers? I've always found them to offer
high value and good sound.
Brad
We should be getting some brand-new NHT speakers for
review in September. The new line will replace the Super Audio series, and the company
promises a worthy replacement. So hang tight -- the reviews are coming!
Spades for receiver's speaker connections?
August 2, 2005
I am having difficulty using spade connections with my
Denon receiver. The connections look like binding posts (which is why I ordered spades on
my cables), but there are only small slots for inserting the wire. Have you experienced
this? Is there a simple solution?
Dave
Most of the speaker connections I've seen on the newer
receivers do look like standard binding posts, but they are designed to accept either bare
wire, pins, or banana plugs. Spades just won't work. In your case you could buy banana
plugs that accept a spade connection on their screw-down top end. This will allow you to
use your current cables without butchering them or having them re-terminated. One caution:
You're best off buying single banana plugs as opposed to the dual plugs; most of the
receivers I've seen will not accept the standard spacing used with the dual plugs. You'll
have far more flexibility with single plugs.
